Problem with NetGear modem...?

I am trying to switch modems on a Verizon network. My old modem is an Actiontech, provided by Verizon. My father decided to buy a NetGear Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem. It's not working. Every time he tries to install the modem using the disk, Windows 7 gives an error message stating: "Windows has detected an IP Address conflict." How do we remedy this problem?
